Blockout curtains.
Dark, quiet, warm.

Blockout curtains use a dense or coated fabric that stops light passing through. Fitted properly - floor length, returned to the wall, sealed at the top - they also hold heat in and take the edge off outside noise.

  1. 1
    Darkness

A coated lining behind the face fabric stops light through the curtain, for sleep and screens.

  2. 2
    Returns to the wall

The curtain wraps back to the wall at each side, so light does not sneak past the edge.

  3. 3
    Insulation

A lined curtain with returns is the best insulator we fit. Warmer in winter, cooler in summer.

  4. 4
    Floor length

Full drops where the room allows, hemmed to the floor, so the window looks finished inside and out.

  5. 5
    Softer room

A heavy curtain takes the echo out of a hard-floored room. Wave fold, pinch pleat or box pleat.

How dark does the room need to be?

Blockout describes the fabric, not the result. Hung on a bare rod, stopping at the sill with a gap each side, it will still let noticeable light in.

The fabric is the easy part. Darkness comes from the fit - the drop, the returns, the centre overlap and the seal at the top.
